PROGETTO PILOTA - Vision-Based Traffic Parameters for Quantifying Accident Risk

PROGETTO PILOTA - Vision-Based Traffic Parameters for Quantifying Accident Risk project targets the developement of new methods for the automatic collection of visual traffic parameters describing the road users behaviour in order to build an accident risk map. Objective is the quantification of the accident risk mitigation by changing some physical characteristics of the road structure.

A reliable estimation of the safety level of the roads is a valuable tool for detecting critical points in the road infrastructure, planning countermeasures, and evaluating their impact on the traffic. At the beginning of the year 2003, ITC-irst (now FBK) in collaboration with Comune di Trento starts a pilot project aiming to mitigate traffic accidents in Trento city. 

The idea inside the project is to define an accident risk index for the evaluation of the safety of urban intersections, before and after the reorganization of their geometry. The index is based only on parameters that are automatically measurable with a vision-based traffic monitoring system, i.e. statistics, relations and aggregation of microscopic traffic data: class, speed, and trajectory of each atomic road-user.

Goals: 
1. Localization of pilot sites in Trento and acquisition of sequences for several days. 2. Identification and automatic extraction of visual characteristics of road traffic strongly related to dangerous situation and risk evaluation. 3. Variations of the infrastructure or the manner in which it is used, by Comune di Trento. 4. Second video acquisition campaign and risk map re-computation with the new road situation. 5. Comparison of accident risk before and after the infrastructure variations.
